Having the same config, but using fedora. How would you suggest going about backing up my file server to my QNAP? Then I noticed that the QNAP has the backup station and was wondering whether that's easy to use from a restoration perspective and how to get it working properly (on the ubuntu server side of things). I've investigated using a third machine running backuppc to an NFS share on the QNAP, but had an error message about the file system not supporting hardlinks. The big challenge is going to be RAM, as your TS-410 doesn't have much in the first place. You could also simply use Backup Station on the NAS to the FTP Server on Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I've only been looking at the messages I've been replying to, so I've been following your NAS model as listed on Your Forum profile rather than re-reading the entire thread. Your Forum profile clearly lists an " SS-839"Įdit: I just noted that your original message did explicitly ask about a TS-410. Perhaps I've been attempting to help you with the wrong NAS model. If you do use Rsync you should be able to configure the NAS end strictly within the WebUI.īTW: When did your SS-839 become a TS-410? Your choices on a TS-410 are really really limited (it only has 0.25GB of RAM). I can rebuild my Linux machines from bare metal in a few hours, so I've never particularly worried about them. I simply use Rsync directly on my Debian boxes, to do my backups, but in honesty I don't backup my Linux machines very often, as all my important "data" lives on my NAS, which is backed up daily. BackupPC used to be offered as a QPKG on the NAS, but it has silently disappeared from the QNAP App Center. Also, netstat -nplt helps to see, what listing sockets you have, something listening on port 21 is usually a FTP server. If hardlinks are supported in the NFS share, then it sounds like that may still be the way to go and I'll just have to try to push through the issue I experienced last night.Īn alternative I came across suggested that backuppc could be installed on the QNAP, but my TS410 was not on the compatibility list. If the connection succeeds you have probably a ftp server listening, which will give you a welcome message which usually contains the version. It's my understanding that backuppc utilises rsync and hardlinks to provide its backups, while also offering a nice interface for both scheduling backups and restoration, which is why I was looking to use it.
